The WCT purchased Smith House in 2011 and began renovating the unused town centre property in June 2012, after receiving grants from various charitable concerns including the Copeland Community Fund.
The building work was completed at the end of 2013 and the property was ready for its first tenants to move in the New Year.
The ‘Move On’ accommodation comprises of 4 self-contained studio flats, all of which contain a kitchenette, shower room and a good sized living area - which we feel is adequate to meet the needs of our young people.
The tenants are Service Users from our two supported accommodation project. These are the young people who feel that they are ready to move on into independence but still require low level support.
All of the young people living with us are vulnerable and have varied and complex needs. During their time with the Trust, our service users learn the valuable independent living skills needed to move on into more permanent accommodation, successfully manage a tenancy and become responsible members of the community.
The project has now been fully operational for 3½ years .
