Multi-Storey Car Park- 1997
The Trust was asked to run the towns dilapidated car park which was a hot spot for crime and vandalism, it was earmarked for demolition.
The trust operated the multi-storey car park for 3 ½ years, employing four local unemployed young men as car park attendants.
During the term there was Zero crime, vandalism and theft.
The car park was taken over in 2001 by a multinational company who retained all our staff.
Town Centre Wardens - 2001-2002
This was a 12-month pilot scheme, where the trust employed a total of six young local men as town centre wardens.
Their role included to report any health & safety hazards in town; assist with lost children and give directions etc.
Tall Ships Project -2002
The trust in partnership with WHC arranged for three tall ships to visit Whitehaven for a 12-week period; a feasibility study to see if we could have tall ships in Whitehaven harbour on a permanent basis which would help to promote tourism & leisure, as well as bringing some skill sets such as riggers, chandlers etc back into Whitehaven.
During the ships stay in the harbour, they attracted 12,000 visitors and the Chamber of Trade reported a 30% improvement of trade in the town.
